About the role
WesTrac is seeking an experienced and motivated Auto Electrician Leading Hand to join our high-performing Rebuilds Workshop in Tomago. In this workshop-based leadership role, you will oversee and participate in the complete overhaul, electrical restoration, and commissioning of surface mining equipment for some of our largest customers across NSW and QLD.
Based in our state of the art Rebuilds Facility at Tomago, NSW, you will provide hands on technical leadership to a team of Auto Electricians and Apprentices, working collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external vendors to deliver Caterpillar equipment rebuilds that consistently meet customer expectations and WesTrac quality standards. Your work will span a broad range of Caterpillar machinery—including Graders, Off-Highway Trucks, large Dozers, Drills, and auxiliary equipment—providing both hands-on technical expertise and day-to-day team guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and promote a proactive safety culture by consistently applying and mentoring WesTrac Life Saving Rules, ensuring the highest standards of workshop safety
- Maintain a strong safety focus in all auto electrical work, leading by example through consistent application of WHS practices and actively identifying, managing, and mitigating risks in day‑to‑day operations.
- Coordinate daily workflow, allocate tasks, and ensure productivity, safety, and quality targets are consistently achieved.
- Perform diagnostics, repairs, upgrades, and electrical overhauls on Caterpillar surface mining equipment.
- Work collaboratively with trades teams, and workshop leadership to manage rebuild schedules and job progress.
- Conduct quality checks to ensure all electrical work meets OEM, Government and Customer specifications, while maintaining a strong safety focus.
Roster and Remuneration
- Monday to Friday – 50-hour week
- Roster pattern: 5D2O x2 | 5N2O x2
- Day shift: 06:00-16:30 | Afternoon shift: 16:00-02:30
- OTE UP TO $155k + Super

What we're looking for
- Trade qualification as an Auto Electrician (Cert III or equivalent – Australian Recognised)
- Provides strong safety leadership, promoting risk awareness, compliance, and continuous improvement while delivering work to OEM standards.
- Proven experience working on mobile plant or mining equipment
- Previous leadership or mentoring experience (highly regarded).
- Diagnostic skills across complex electrical systems, schematics, and control circuits.
- Experience in electrical overhauls, rebuilds, repairs, or heavy equipment maintenance.
- Ability to lead by example, influence team culture, and support junior technicians.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple trades.
- Ability to work effectively within structured workshop environments and meet deadlines.
