Workshop Supervisor

The Workshop Supervisor, reporting to the Area Manager – Hydraulics, Machine Shop, is responsible for leading the Machine Shop and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) teams based in South Guildford. The Machine Shop operates as a critical feeder facility, salvaging, repairing, and manufacturing components that support all WesTrac WA business units, with the Component Rebuild Centre (CRC) being the primary customer. Equipped with state-of-the-art CNC machining centres, robotic technology, and a comprehensive range of robust manual machining equipment, the Machine Shop delivers high-quality component solutions across a wide range of applications. The NDT team provides inspection services across WesTrac WA to ensure component integrity, quality, and compliance. This role is accountable for leading a high-performing team, maintaining exceptional safety and quality standards, optimising workflow and productivity, and ensuring customer expectations are consistently achieved.
Location: South Guilford
Roster: Monday – Friday Days, 10.5 Hrs (Including unpaid meal break) with 1 rostered Saturday per quarter
What You'll Do:
- Lead a diverse team, including Manual and CNC Machinists, NDT Technicians, Trade Assistants, and Apprentices.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Machine Shop and NDT departments, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality service delivery.
- Manage workflow, priorities, and resource allocation to support all WesTrac WA business units, with a strong focus on meeting customer requirements and turnaround times.
- Ensure components are salvaged, repaired, manufactured, and inspected in accordance with Caterpillar, customer, and WesTrac quality standards.
- Drive safety leadership by promoting positive safety behaviours, conducting workplace inspections, and ensuring compliance with all safety requirements.
- Monitor operational performance, productivity, and quality metrics, implementing improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and customer outcomes.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, provide coaching and feedback, and support employee development and succession planning.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders (workshop supervisors, planners, business units and vendors) to optimise processes and deliver exceptional customer service.
- Drive cost control, efficiency improvements, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Foster an inclusive, accountable, and high-performing team culture that encourages engagement, collaboration, and development.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable procedures, standards, certifications, and regulatory requirements associated with machining and NDT activities
Skills and Experience:
- Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory position within a machine shop, manufacturing, or heavy industry environment
- Caterpillar Systems, Parts and Product knowledge (Desirable)
- Strong planning, organisational, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate across multiple departments
- Have the demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate and lead a team & collaborate well with others.
- Business acumen: Awareness of cost control and efficiency drivers is highly valued
- Technical trade qualification: Not mandatory, but advantageous
- Coachability: A willingness to learn and grow — we’ll support you to build deeper commercial and operational knowledge
- Skilled in developing and implementing standardised processes to enhance efficiency, consistency and quality.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with a focus on root cause analysis and sustainable solutions.
